What You Say Matters

Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy;

without holiness no one will see the Lord.

Hebrews 12: 14 NIV

Do you ever watch old sitcoms to unwind? Tuning into "Newhart,” a popular television series in the eighties and nineties, my husband and I chuckled as Dick Loudon, author, and owner of a Vermont inn with his wife, Joanna, tried not to compromise his values while golfing and playing cards with the guys.

Entertained, and sharing knowing glances across our living room, it was easy to agree that the producer and writer knew all too well how to relate to their viewing audience.

Eager to check out the local country club, sporting his loud golfing attire, Dick faced a dilemma.

Gung ho, not clear on his new pals’ intentions Dick felt uneasy. He squirmed. He chose not to confront the situation head on. He was in agony until he came up with a solution to help him remain on moral ground.

It got me to thinking, like Newhart, how many times, over the years, have I, and maybe you, too, danced around situations and conversations, before revealing who we really are and what we stand for?

Today peer pressure isn’t just reserved for adolescents. Whether it be in schools, at the workplace, on the news, or in our own relationships, evil forces and earthly distractions are many. Even with a strong faith we can be steered off course.

It can be difficult to discern the truth no matter where we turn.

As followers of Jesus, there is only one response.

What we say and do matters.

Whether new or mature in faith, the psalmist David reminds us, “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful towards those who keep the demands of his covenant” (Psalm 25: 9).

God’s power, strength, and protection become our own: “Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies-make your way straight before me” (Psalms 5: 8).

Empowered by God’s Word, I live with intention.

I reach out to Jesus. I place my hand in his, and together we walk on holy ground. Full of grace I have nothing to fear. After time in prayer, I am led where I need to be. The Holy Spirit paves the way.

No matter what force I am up against, the Power of One is all I need.

I receive the confidence I need to say the right words.

My friend, wherever you are today, I pray you know that God is with you in each moment, too. He walks before you, and beside you. Seeking his Divine Wisdom is always the best place to start. As sisters in Christ, may we, “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; for without holiness no one will see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14).

What you and I say matters.

It is up to us to transform the world one conversation at a time.

Until next time…

May the Spirit of God lead you, the Word of God sustain you, and the promises of God grant you the gift of everlasting peace.
